Hace ya algún tiempo no habíamos paseado por nuestra ciudad; así que decidimos ponernos nuestras mascarillas, tomar los bolsos e ir a turistear. En Cuenca siempre hay un detalle nuevo por descubrir y con las medidas de bioseguridad necesarias, tiendas, restaurantes, bares y hoteles se activan nuevamente, poco a poco y con mucho trabajo de sus administradores.
It has been a while since we went for a walk in our city; so we decided to put on our masks, take our bags and go around again. In Cuenca there is always a new detail to discover and with the necessary biosecurity measures, shops, restaurants, bars and hotels are activated again, little by little and with a lot of work.
Caminar por el Centro Histórico es el inicio de una buena experiencia. Comenzamos en San Sebastián, donde encontramos deliciosas cervezas artesanales, cafeterías, una iglesia muy reconocida en la ciudad -por su belleza y antiguedad-, el Museo de Arte Moderno y galerías de arte y artesanías muy cercanas a la plaza principal.
Walking through the Historic Center is the beginning of a good experience. We start in San Sebastián, where we find delicious craft beers, coffee shops, a well-known church in the city -for its beauty and antiquity-, the Museum of Modern Art and art and craft galleries very close to the main square.
La Calle Santa Ana es uno de los emblemas de Cuenca; definitivamente, es uno de los lugares más fotografiables del sector. Debe ser por el contraste de las paredes que la delimitan: A un costado, la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción y al otro lado, el Seminario San Luis. Esta fue nuestra próxima parada.
Santa Ana Street is one of the emblems of Cuenca; It is definitely one of the most photographic places in the sector. It must be due to the contrast of the walls that define it: On one side, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and on the other side, the San Luis Seminary. This was our next stop.
Si te quedas por aquí, podrás ver y comprar hermosas artesanías de diseñadores ecuatorianos, probarte sombreros, joyas, pañoletas, accesorios y ponchos. Luego, podrías quedarte a comer algo rico en los restaurantes del Seminario.

If you stay here, you can see and buy beautiful crafts from Ecuadorian designers, try hats, jewelry, scarves, accessories and ponchos. Then, you could stay to eat something delicious in the restaurants of the Seminary.
All of these places already have a biosecurity system, confirmed by a seal granted by the Turism Fundation of Cuenca, which says: Cuenca, Safe and Sustainable.

Al cruzar hacia el Parque Calderón, tomamos fotos en la pileta principal del parque; tiene un estilo colonial inconfundible. Al frente, verás una casa refaccionada de color amarillo: La Casa del Parque. En su interior, hay más de 10 locales de comidas y dulces, que te van a encantar. Las personas que te atiendan, gustosos te contarán la historia de los primeros dueños de la casa.

As we crossed to Calderón Park, we took photos in the park's main water pool; It has an unmistakable colonial style. In front, you will see a recently renovated yellow house: La Casa del Parque. Inside, there are more than 10 places for food and sweets, which you will love. The people who attend you, will gladly tell you the story of the first owners of the house.
Finalmente, nos dirigimos hacia el Convento de las Madres Conceptas. Aquí, las madres realizan dulces típicos desde el tiempo de la Colonia, no puedes irte sin probarlos. Puedes también visitar el Museo de las Conceptas o capturar una increíble foto desde la esquina de las calles Presidente Córdova y Borrero. Desde ese punto, se observan las torres y las campanas del Convento.
Finally, we head towards the Convent of the Mothers Conceptas. Here, nuns make typical sweets from the time of the Colony, you can not leave without trying them. You can also visit the Museo de las Conceptas or capture an incredible photo from the corner of Presidente Córdova and Borrero streets. From that point, the towers and bells of the Convent are very visible.
Para retornar hacia nuestro auto, probamos el Tranvía de Cuenca. Quedamos impresionados con el orden de los usuarios para cumplir con el distanciamiento social establecido al hacer una fila para entrar y al sentarse en los lugares permitidos. Este es parte del Sistema de Transporte Integrado de la ciudad: incluso hay espacio para llevar tu bicicleta en caso de que quieras conectarte luego con otra vía.
To return to our car, we tried the Cuenca’s Tram. We were impressed with the order of the users to comply with the established social distance when queuing to enter and sitting in the allowed places. This is part of the city's Integrated Transport System: there is even a place to carry your bicycle in case you want to connect to another route later.
A solo 20 minutos en carro, está el Parque Nacional Cajas. Esta vez, aparte de las caminatas alrededor de las increíbles lagunas de la zona, fuimos a visitar un pequeño pueblo histórico -antes dedicado a la minería- que se llama “Guabidula”.
Just 20 minutes by car is the Cajas National Park. This time, apart from the hikes around the incredible lagoons in the area, we went to visit a small historic town - dedicated to mining - called "Guabidula".
En este lugar, se conservan las casas típicas -de adobe y paja- con fogones que calentaban el ambiente y al mismo tiempo servían para cocinar; las camas de paja, los objetos de barro y espacios donde se colgaba la carne para secarla y conservarla por más tiempo. Los techos son bajos para retener el calor en esta zona fría y húmeda.
Como era típico en los pueblos mineros, también existe un antiguo bar que se mantiene en pie a través del tiempo; donde seguramente, los mineros venían a distraerse y descansar de sus quehaceres.
In this place, the typical houses -made with adobe and straw- are conserved, with stoves that warmed the environment and at the same time served for cooking; straw beds, clay objects and special places where meat was hung to dry it and keep it longer. The ceilings are low to retain heat in this cold and humid area.
As was typical in the mining towns, there is also an old bar that remains standing over time; where surely, the miners came to distract themselves and rest from their work.
Guabidula está rodeado por un bosque de papel, huertos y miradores. Se puede llegar a pie o a caballo, partiendo desde el complejo turístico de Dos Chorreras. Cuando entras a la mina, todo el ambiente cambia. Se conservan túneles, puntos donde se recogía pirita y varios escapes de seguridad. No te preocupes, es imposible perderse.
Terminamos nuestro recorrido en una hermosa y pequeña capilla, decorada con un faro ocre a la entrada y una cruz preciosa sobre la construcción.
Guabidula is surrounded by a paper forest, gardens and viewpoints. It can be reached on foot or on horseback, starting from the Dos Chorreras tourist complex. When you enter the mine, the whole environment changes. Tunnels, points where pyrite was collected and various safety escapes, are preserved. Do not worry, it is impossible to get lost.
We finish our tour in a wonderful little chapel, decorated with an ocher lighthouse at the entrance and a beautiful cross on the building.
Aunque esta vez no nos animamos a pescar, jamás dejaríamos para otro día unas riquísimas truchas y el locro de papas, típicos del Cajas. Si es todavía muy temprano para ti, puedes calentarte con un rico chocolate en leche y algunos dulces, en los distintos refugios del lugar.
Pues así, de a poco, Cuenca y sus alrededores se reactivan y los cuencanos junto a nuestra ciudad. Cumple las normas de bioseguridad, es muy importante, y encuentra una actividad que se acople a tu familia o amigos y disfruta a Cuenca al máximo.
Although this time we don’t want to fish, we would never leave for later a delicious trout and potato locro, typical of Cajas. If it is still too early for you, you can warm up with a rich milk chocolate and some sweets, in the different shelters of the place.
Little by little, Cuenca and its surroundings are reactivated and the Cuencans with our city. Comply with biosecurity standards, it is very important, and find an activity that suits your family or friends and enjoy Cuenca to the fullest.
