Traditional neighborhoods, puppets, the New Year's Eve Party and The 'Innocents'
Durante los últimos 45 fines de año, la Unión de Periodistas del Azuay y Amistad Club (una organización, sin ánimo de lucro, que rescata y mantiene las tradiciones cuencanas), se han encargado de organizar un gran evento con la participación de los barrios urbanos y la colaboración del Municipio de Cuenca.
El año pasado, por ejemplo, un total de 27 barrios se inscribieron en el tradicional concurso de años viejos, organizado cada 31 de diciembre. Luego de las seis de la tarde, la música, bailes, fuegos artificiales y payasos, se escuchan en las calles. El jurado calificador recorre los sectores inscritos y los participantes les invitan platos y bebidas típicas.
Cada barrio arma distintas escenografías que representan situaciones sociales, históricas y políticas del país, programas de TV, etc., con un toque cómico o irónico, para que no vuelvan a suceder en el año venidero.
“Lo Bueno, Lo Malo y Lo Feo de 2019”, “Fue sin Querer Queriendo”, “Crisis Milenial”, “Los Titanes del Ring”, “Los Libertadores de la Patria”, “Rápidos y Furiosos”, “Runa Chef”, fueron algunos de los temas elegidos en 2019, para construir muñecos y situaciones. Ese año, los premios fueron desde los 3.000 a los 1.000 dólares para los barrios ganadores.
During the last 45 year-ends, the Azuayan Journalists Union and the Friendship Club (a non-profit organization that rescues and maintains Cuenca's traditions), have been in charge of organizing a large event with the participation of urban neighborhoods and the collaboration of the Municipality of Cuenca.
Last year, for example, a total of 27 neighborhoods entered this traditional contest, organized every December 31st. After six in the afternoon, music, dancing, fireworks and clowns are heard in the streets. The jury goes through the registered sectors and the participants invite them typical dishes and drinks. Each neighborhood creates different sets that represent social, historical and political situations in the country, TV programs, etc., with a comic or ironic touch, so that they do not happen again in the coming year.
"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of 2019", "It Was 'Without Wanting' to Want", "Millennial Crisis", "The Titans of the Ring", "The Liberators of the Homeland", "Fast and Furious", "Runa Chef", were some of the themes chosen in 2019, to build dolls and situations. That year, the prizes ranged from $ 3,000 to
$ 1,000 for the winning neighborhoods.
¿Qué sucederá este año?
Pues, este año es importante que los participantes y los ciudadanos de los barrios cuiden de su salud, conserven el distanciamiento social y eviten las conglomeraciones de personas. Por esto, las escenografías y monigotes no estarán en la vía pública, sino en espacios cerrados, como viviendas o canchas familiares.
Los organizadores realizarán transmisiones en vivo, desde esos sitios y el jurado calificador podrá visitarlos con las medidas de bioseguridad necesarias. De esta forma, los cuencanos podrán ver las creativas alegorías desde sus hogares mientras son calificadas.

What will happen this year?
Well, this year it is important that the participants and the citizens take care of their health, maintain social distancing and avoid conglomerations of people. For this reason, the sets and puppets will not be on public roads, but in closed spaces, such as homes or family courts.
The organizers will carry out live broadcasts from those sites and the jury will be able to visit them with the necessary biosecurity measures. In this way, Cuencans will be able to see the creative allegories from their homes while they are rated.

El 06 de enero
Todos los años, en Cuenca, celebramos la tradicional Fiesta de los Santos Inocentes. El 6 de enero, los cuencanos salen a las calles con todo tipo de disfraces y se organizan comparsas en un desfile en el que se recrean los hechos y personajes nacionales e internacionales más sobresalientes del año anterior.
La Fiesta de los Santos Inocentes es una curiosa mezcla entre fiesta religiosa y popular. Su origen se remonta al siglo V, cuando la Iglesia Católica empezó a celebrar esta fiesta en memoria de los niños que murieron en Judea por orden de Herodes, poco tiempo después del nacimiento de Jesús.
En sus inicios esta celebración tuvo un carácter estrictamente religioso, con el pasar del tiempo, otros elementos de carácter pagano fueron incorporándose. En Ecuador esta fiesta se celebra en las principales ciudades con mascaradas y sátiras. Particularmente en Cuenca, lo tradicional es celebrar con burlas y bromas para sacar a relucir la “inocencia” de una persona.
Organizaciones educativas, como las principales universidades de la ciudad, y grupos de amigos participan en las comparsas con el afán de ser premiados como un grupo original y creativo en ese año.
Cientos de cuencanos y visitantes se concentran a lo largo de la Avenida Huayna Cápac para disfrutar de esta interesante muestra de creatividad y diversión: sátiras, disfraces, colorido, música de este desfile que dura aproximadamente cuatro horas.

Every year, in Cuenca, we celebrate the traditional Festival of the Holy Innocents. On January 6, people from Cuenca take the streets with all kinds of costumes, and groups are organized in a parade in which the most outstanding national or international events and characters -of the previous- year are recreated. The Feast of the Holy Innocents is a curious mix between a religious and a popular festival. Its origin dates back to the 5th century, when the Catholic Church began to celebrate this festival in memory of the children who died in Judea, order by Herod, shortly after the birth of Jesus.
In the beginning, this celebration had a strictly religious character, with time passing by, other elements of a pagan nature were incorporated. In Ecuador this festival is celebrated in the main cities with masquerades and satires. Particularly in Cuenca, the tradition is to celebrate with mockery and jokes to bring out the “innocence” of a person. Educational organizations, such as the main universities in the city, and groups of friends participate in the comparsas with the aim of being awarded as an original and creative group in that year. Hundreds of Cuencans and visitors gather along Avenida Huayna Cápac to enjoy this interesting display of creativity and fun: satires, costumes, colors, music from this parade that lasts approximately four hours.
¿Qué pasará el 06 de enero de 2021?
A pesar del problema mundial de COVID-19, no queremos dejar de lado nuestras celebraciones. Por eso, es necesario realizarlas con todas las medidas de bioseguridad y sin aglomeraciones. Este 6 de enero del 2021, los participantes presentarán sus obras dentro de sus propios predios, en espacios cerrados al público. Es decir, se llevarán a cabo en las Universidades, barrios o casas.
