Visit Cuenca again ... but from a Panoramic Bus!
Varios servicios turísticos de nuestra ciudad empiezan a activarse nuevamente; es el caso de los buses turísticos de dos pisos, listos para ser utilizados tanto por locales como extranjeros. Definitivamente, representan una oportunidad para recorrer nuestra ciudad y volver a conocerla, maravillarse un poco más con nuestra historia y con cada uno de los rincones antiguos o remodelados de este Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
El servicio de guianza en los autobuses es bilingüe, inicia en el Centro Histórico, precisamente en el Parque Calderón. Los buses suelen estacionarse a las puertas del Museo Catedral Vieja, cada hora. Una vez aquí, seguirás protocolos de bioseguridad antes de ingresar al autobús, recuerda llevar siempre tu mascarilla y obedecer las recomendaciones de los guías en cuanto a distanciamiento y procesos de seguridad.
Several tourist services of our city begin to activate again; this is the case of the double-decker tourist buses, ready to be used by both locals and foreigners. Definitely, they represent an opportunity to visit our city and get to know it again, to marvel a little more with our history and with each of the old or remodeled corners of this World Heritage Site.
The guide service on the buses is bilingual, it begins in the Historic Center, precisely in the Calderón Park. Buses usually park at the doors of the Old Cathedral Museum, every hour. Once here, you will follow biosecurity protocols before entering the bus, remember to always wear your mask and obey the guides' recommendations regarding distancing and security processes.
¿Cuál es la ventaja de tomar este Bus Panorámico? Admirarás las calles adoquinadas llenas de casonas con balcones y fachadas de influencia europea. La ruta sigue una de nuestras calles principales: Simón Bolívar, en la que podrás observar edificaciones que llamarán tu atención, como la Casa Ordóñez Mata, la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción, la Casa Verde, la Casa Sojos, la Dirección Provincial de Educación, la Casa de la Familia Jerves Calero, la Casa del Coco, y la Casa de la Bienal de Pintura. Todas estas casonas son también parte de la Ruta Francesa de la ciudad (https://cuencaecuador.com.ec/rutas-recomendadas).
Llegando al Barrio de San Sebastián y principalmente a la plaza central, tendrás la oportunidad de admirar desde afuera el Museo de Arte Moderno, ubicado en la antigua Casa de Temperancia. Recuerda que este barrio tradicional, también está lleno de cafés, helados y buena comida, típica o internacional. Cerca al Museo de Arte Moderno, existen también galerías de arte (pintura y escultura) y artesanías propias del Azuay (con calidad de exportación).
Enseguida, el bus se abrirá paso por la Calle Larga, donde verás el Museo Remigio Crespo Toral, la Plaza de la Merced y continuarás hasta la Iglesia de Todos Santos y su mirador, muy cerca del Complejo Arqueológico Pumapungo, su Aviario, Teatro y el Museo.
What is the advantage of taking this Panoramic Bus? You will admire the cobbled streets full of houses with balconies and facades of European influence. The route follows one of our main streets: Simón Bolívar, where you can see buildings that will catch your attention, such as the Ordóñez Mata House, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, the Green House, the Sojos House, the Provincial Directorate of Education, the Jerves Calero Family House, the Coco House, and the House of the Painting Biennial. Arriving at the Barrio de San Sebastián and mainly at the central square, you will have the opportunity to admire -from the outside- the Museum of Modern Art, located in the old House of Temperance. Remember that this traditional neighborhood is also full of cafes, ice creams and good food, typical or international. Close to the Museum of Modern Art, there are also art galleries (painting and sculpture) and handicrafts typical of Azuay (with export quality).
Immediately, the bus will make its way through Calle Larga, where you will see the Remigio Crespo Toral Museum, the Plaza de la Merced and you will continue to the Church of ‘Todos Santos’ and its viewpoint, very close to the Pumapungo Archaeological Complex, its Aviary, Theater and the Museum.
Una parte del Puente Roto se observa desde este punto y por supuesto, el Río Tomebamba. Pronto tomarás la Avenida Solano, una de las principales avenidas de zona moderna de la ciudad, separada del Centro Histórico por el Barranco del Tomebamba. En esta avenida, se estableció la primera parte de la ciclovía de la ciudad.
Sobre la Avenida Solano, verás varios monumentos que los guías te explicarán: Entre ellos, Carlos Cueva Tamariz -fundador de la Casa de la Cultura Núcleo del Azuay-, Honorato Vázquez -maestro, escritor, poeta y pintor y rector de la Universidad de Cuenca-, Fray Vicente Solano -patrono del periodismo azuayo, fundador del periódico Ecos del Azuay, teólogo, orador, literato, defensor de las ideas bolivarianas-, entre otros.
En la misma Avenida se encuentra el colegio más antiguo de la ciudad: Colegio Benigno Malo. Un edificio de la Ruta Francesa de Cuenca, construido en 1938. Su biblioteca cuenta con 8.600 ejemplares. La obra más antigua data de 1602 y se llama “Obras Morales en romance” de Luys Sánchez, que tiene una pasta elaborada con cuero de oveja.
A part of the Broken Bridge can be seen from this point and of course, the Tomebamba River. Soon you will take Avenida Solano, one of the main avenues in the modern area of the city, separated from the Historic Center by the Barranco del Tomebamba. On this avenue, the first part of the city's bike route was established.
On Solano Avenue, you will see several monuments that the guides will explain to you: Among them, Carlos Cueva Tamariz -founder of the Casa de la Cultura Nucleo del Azuay-, Honorato Vázquez -teacher, writer, poet and painter and rector of the University of Cuenca-, Fray Vicente Solano -patron of Azuayan journalism, founder of the newspaper Ecos del Azuay, theologian, speaker, writer, defender of Bolivarian ideas-, among others.
On the same avenue, is the oldest school in the city: Colegio Benigno Malo. A building on the French Route of Cuenca, built in 1938. Its library has 8,600 copies. The oldest work dates from 1602 and is called "Moral Works in Romance" by Luys Sánchez, which has a paste made from sheep leather.
El recorrido terminará en el Mirador de Turi, donde encontrarás también a la Iglesia de Turi. La construcción de esta edificación religiosa data de los años 30´s, por el Padre Guambaña, gestor e ideador de la actual parroquia. En el interior de la iglesia podrás ver una imagen de la Virgen de la Merced, patrona de la parroquia.
Si prefieres la adrenalina, pregunta por el Columpio de Turi. Este columpio está agarrado de grandes árboles de eucalipto; podrás colocarte en una pendiente con una amplia y única vista hacia Cuenca.
Luego de este increíble repaso de la ciudad, de regreso -en el autobús panorámico- también recorrerás el Sector Tres Puentes y la Avenida Loja hasta regresar al punto de partida en el Parque Calderón. Es una aventura que todo cuencano te recomendará, seas o no de nuestra ciudad.
The tour will end at Turi’s Viewpoint, where you will also find the Church of Turi. The construction of this religious building dates from the 30's, by Father Guambaña, manager and creator of the current parish. Inside the church you will see an image of the ‘Virgen de la Merced’, patron saint of the parish.
If you prefer adrenaline, ask for the ‘Columpio de Turi’. This swing is held by large eucalyptus trees; you can stand on a slope with a wide and unique view of Cuenca.
After this incredible overview of the city, back in the panoramic bus, you will also go through the ‘Tres Puentes’ Sector and Loja Avenue until you return to the starting point in Calderón Park. It is an adventure that every person in Cuenca can recommend, whether or not you are from our city.
