Hoy conversamos con Oswaldo Vanegas -Gerente de Kuna Hotel-, que junto a su hermano Hugo Vanegas, está a la cabeza de Kuna desde hace 7 años. Hace poco leímos algunas noticias sobre este hotel, puesto que han decidido compartir su conexión a internet con estudiantes de recursos limitados y de este modo apoyarlos en su asistencia a clases vía plataformas digitales.

¿Cómo es Kuna?

El hotel, relativamente nuevo en el sector (Av. de las Américas y Luis Cordero), cuenta con 24 habitaciones y capacidad de 66 personas. Las habitaciones tienen diferentes tipos de acomodación. Gracias a la acogida de la ciudad, está siempre lleno de huéspedes nacionales y extranjeros.

Aunque su público principal es el corporativo, también escuelas y colegios -de paseo por la ciudad de Cuenca- llegan gracias a sus planes, ofertas, alternativas y promociones.

Este es un hotel de estilo moderno, posee lobbies en cada uno de los pisos; cuenta con ‘Kasa’, su restaurante; el ‘Salón Cumbre’ para 60 personas; y un parqueadero. Es, definitivamente, un hotel muy completo en sus instalaciones, sin embargo, su fuerte es su enfoque en el servicio.

Today we talked with Oswaldo Vanegas -Manager of Kuna Hotel- who, along with his brother Hugo Vanegas, has been at the head of Kuna for 7 years. We recently read some news about this hotel, since they have decided to share their internet connection with students with limited resources and support them in their attendance to classes via digital platforms.

What is Kuna like? The hotel, relatively new in the sector (Av. De las Américas and Luis Cordero), has 24 rooms and a capacity for 66 people. The rooms have different types of accommodation. Thanks to the city's welcome, it is always full of national and foreign guests. Although its main audience is corporate, also schools and colleges -for a small trip to the city of Cuenca- arrive thanks to their plans, offers, alternatives and promotions. This is a modern style hotel, it has lobbies on each of the floors; it has ‘Kasa’, its restaurant; the ‘Cumbre Hall’ for 60 people; and a parking lot. It is definitely a very complete hotel in its facilities, however, its strength is its focus on service.

Bioseguridad:

Desde la emergencia sanitaria, a causa de la COVID-19, el sector hotelero de nuestra ciudad se vio en la necesidad de tomar ciertas medidas de bioseguridad a rigor. En la entrada a Kuna, por ejemplo, hay un servicio de aseo para el lavado de manos y limpieza antes de entrar. Luego, en la recepción, una persona te tomará la temperatura, te ofrecerá alcohol en gel y también podrás desinfectar tu calzado antes de entrar a las instalaciones.

Al entrar a las habitaciones, verás que también cuentan con pequeños sellos que garantizan que los espacios han sido desinfectados apropiadamente antes de su uso.

Otra de las grandes ventajas de visitar Kuna es que cuentan con un restaurante que sirve comida nacional e internacional. Antes de la pandemia, los desayunos eran de tipo buffet; ahora, se sirven directamente en la mesa según el gusto del huésped.

El restaurante del hotel está abierto también para el público en general. Al tratarse de comida nacional, aquí incluso puedes probar un delicioso cuy asado acompañado con papas o mote sucio, puesto que uno de sus principales aliados es el restaurante Rancho Dorado, entonces, durante cualquier hora del día se sirve comida típica, así como también platos internacionales.

Si visitas Kuna, también te recomendamos probar el ‘Plato Típico Cuencano’, tiene carne asada, mote sucio, mote pillo, chorizo cuencano, arroz y ensalada. O las Costillas a la Kuna, que son las más pedidas por los clientes.

Biosecurity: Since the health emergency, due to COVID-19, the hotel sector in our city was forced to take certain biosecurity measures rigorously. At the entrance to Kuna, for example, there is a sink for hand washing and cleaning before entering. Then, at the reception, a person will take your temperature, offer you alcohol gel and you can also disinfect your shoes before entering the facilities. Upon entering the rooms, you will see that they also have small seals that guarantee that the spaces have been properly disinfected before use. Another great advantage of visiting Kuna is that they have a restaurant that serves national and international food. Before the pandemic, breakfasts were buffet style; now, they are served directly to the table according to the guest's taste.

The hotel restaurant is also open to the general public. If you prefer national food, here you can try a delicious roasted guinea pig accompanied with potatoes or 'dirty mote', since one of its main allies is the Rancho Dorado restaurant, so, during any time of the day typical food is served, as well as international dishes. If you visit Kuna, we also recommend the ‘Cuencan Typical Dish’, it has roasted meat, 'dirty mote', 'mote pillo', Cuencan chorizo, rice and salad. Or the Kuna´s Ribs, which are the most requested by customers.

Oswaldo Vanegas nos cuenta que, como empresa, siempre han estado preocupados en conjugar los negocios con la ayuda social. Nos recuerdan que obtener réditos económicos es muy positivo, pero lo social brinda una gran satisfacción, que no tiene valor económico.

Ya antes habían realizado algunas actividades, por ejemplo: en el día del niño del año pasado, trajeron estudiantes de escuelas rurales, para una función de cine en el ‘Salón Cumbre’, Kuna corrió con los gastos del transporte y un refrigerio para los niños.

Ahora, que han visto que la ocupación del hotel no es total, han querido prestar las instalaciones para estudiantes que no tienen acceso a internet. Comenzaron con 4 computadores, pero hubo la necesidad de ampliar el servicio a 7 computadores y en varios horarios de uso.

Incluso, hubo días en los que los trabajadores del hotel han tenido que prestar sus teléfonos celulares para que más niños se conecten a clases.

Normalmente, asiste una madre que tiene 6 hijos y todos deben conectarse para clases. Antes se turnaban, así que los niños tenían que faltar. Es una realidad muy complicada, en la que Kuna decidió hacer un gran esfuerzo.

Free Internet for students: Oswaldo Vanegas tells us that, as a company, they have always been concerned about combining business with social work. They remind us that obtaining economic returns is very positive, but social matters provide great satisfaction, which has no economic value. They had already carried out some activities before, for example: on Children's Day last year, they brought students from rural schools, for a film show in the 'Cumbre Hall', Kuna covered the costs of transportation and a snack for the children .

Now that they have seen that the hotel is not fully occupied, they wanted to provide the facilities for students who do not have internet access. They started with 4 computers, but there was a need to expand the service to 7 computers and different schedules of use. There were even days when hotel workers had to lend their cell phones so that more children could connect to classes. Typically a mother with 6 children attends here and they all need to log in for classes. Before they took turns, so the children had to be absent. It is a very complicated reality, in which Kuna decided to make a great effort.

Se han distribuido las diferentes áreas del hotel para conservar el distanciamiento social. Así las madres y los niños, y los empleados, tienen la seguridad de estar a salvo de contagios. Los niños incluso reciben una pequeña colación. Durante el día llegan de 15 a 18 chicos a diferentes horas. El hotel siempre les brindará algo para comer o picar. Incluso en la noche, llega también gente que debe entregar documentos a su trabajo o cualquiera que tenga urgencia por utilizar la internet para continuar con su educación o empleo. Lo único que deben hacer es llamar para asegurarse de que haya espacio para todos.
