Christmas and our Identity

La Navidad es una celebración -definitivamente- muy esperada a nivel mundial; todos admiramos las luces por la noche, los adornos, la comida, las postales y los paisajes, que se engalanan por esta fiesta. Este año, aunque diferente y de cuidado, no queremos dejar de lado la gran tradición que tenemos en nuestra ciudad.

En el mes de diciembre, la mejor opción es viajar a Cuenca y el mejor obsequio es una artesanía para vivir una “Navidad con Identidad”.

Así se llama esta campaña que impulsamos en esta fecha, con el objetivo de realzar el talento y creatividad de los artesanos del cantón. Queremos invitarte a participar de la activación de la economía del sector, al buscar una hermosa artesanía local como regalo para tus seres queridos. Nochebuena será aún más especial al regalar un pedacito de Cuenca.

Aquí, iniciamos diciembre con la “Fiesta de las Luces” en honor a la Virgen Morenica del Rosario; también se establece una Ruta Navideña, con la iluminación y decoración de las principales plazas y parques de la ciudad y sus parroquias rurales, junto a coros, alegorías, el árbol de Navidad más grande del país, un hermoso Nacimiento gigante y el Pase del Niño Viajero.

Christmas is -definitely- a celebration highly anticipated worldwide; we all admire the lights at night, decorations, food, postcards and landscapes, which are decorated for this festivity. This year, although different from others, we do not want to leave aside the great tradition we have in our city.

In December, the best option is travel to Cuenca and the best gift is a craft to live a "Christmas with our Identity". This is the name of the campaign we promote on this date, with the aim of enhancing the talent and creativity of the artisans of the canton. We invite you to participate in the activation of the economy of the sector, by looking for a beautiful local crafts as a gift for your loved ones. Christmas Eve will be even more special by giving a little piece of Cuenca.

Here, we start December with the “Festival of Lights” in honor of the Virgen Morenica del Rosario; a Christmas Route is also established, with the lighting and decoration of the main squares and parks of the city and its rural parishes, along with choirs, allegories, the largest Christmas tree in the country, a beautiful giant Nativity scene and the 'Traveler Child' .

La fiesta no termina por las complicaciones que el COVID-19 trajo consigo. Si bien será necesario conservar tu distancia y las medidas de seguridad adecuadas, los comercios, restaurantes, bares, hoteles, entre otros, se han preparado para recibir a los cuencanos y nuestros visitantes de la mejor manera.

Fiestas religiosas, nacimientos, los ‘niñitos’ (esculturas con historia familiar) y mercaditos que se activan en diferentes puntos de la ciudad, nuestra gastronomía y la valoraciòn de la artesanía como un regalo de gran significado, hacen de la Navidad, en Cuenca, una fiesta única.

Tampoco nos olvidamos de las golosinas de antaño: quimbolitos, humitas y tortillas, para los cafés de media tarde; el pernil, preparado de una manera especial en esta parte del Azuay. Definitivamente tenemos una deliciosa cocina andina.

Religious festivals, births, the 'niñito' (little child: and sculpture of baby Jesus) and markets that are activated in different parts of the city, our gastronomy and the appreciation of crafts as a gift of great significance, make Christmas, in Cuenca, a unique party. Nor do we forget the sweets of yesteryear: quimbolitos, humitas and tortillas, for mid-afternoon coffees; the pork, prepared in a special way in this part of Azuay. We definitely have delicious Andean cuisine.

¿Dónde puedo encontrar productos artesanales?

Alrededor de 57 artesanos, ubicados en la Galería del Portal Regional de Artesanías de Cuenca – PRAC, y el Centro Municipal Artesanal – CEMUART, ofrecen un sin número de objetos creados en cerámica, orfebrería, paja toquilla, hierro forjado, bordado, talabartería, hojalatería, madera y marmolería. Todos los diseños y creaciones son perfectos para un regalo y más en una fecha tan especial.

Adicionalmente, del 18 al 23 de diciembre en las instalaciones del Portal Regional de Artesanías, respetando el aforo y aplicando todos los protocolos de bioseguridad, se desarrollará una exposición artesanal con la participación de 80 artesanos y emprendedores. Habrá 20 stands por día, permitiendo de esta manera que todos los actores del proyecto “100% Hecho a Mano” y “Punto Emprendedor”, ofrezcan sus productos a los turistas, visitantes y los ciudadanos en general.

Where can I find artisan products?

Around 57 artisans, located in the Gallery of the Regional Portal of Handicrafts of Cuenca - PRAC, and the Municipal Craft Center - CEMUART, offer a number of objects created in ceramics, goldsmiths, shawl straw, wrought iron, embroidery, saddlery, tin , wood and marble. All designs and creations are perfect for a gift and more on such a special date.

Additionally, from December 18 to 23, at the facilities of the Regional Handicraft Portal, respecting the limited capacity and applying all biosafety protocols, a craft exhibition will be held with the participation of 80 artisans and entrepreneurs. There will be 20 stands per day, thus allowing all the actors of the "100% Handmade" and "Entrepreneurial Point" project to offer their products to tourists, visitors and citizens in general.
