Neowise seen from Cuenca
¿Sabías que la última vez que un cometa fue visible en el cielo -a simple vista desde todo el mundo- fue hace 13 años? En 2007, el cometa McNaught pudo ser observado gracias a su intensa luminosidad y este año, tuvimos la suerte de disfrutar de otro fenómeno así de particular.
Este 23 de julio, el cometa Neowise alcanzó su punto más cercano a la Tierra, es decir, a 103 millones de kilómetros. Este es un fenómeno astronómico poco común y poco predecible. Alrededor de las 21:00 de ese día, muchos ecuatorianos pudieron ver este fenómeno, al igual que el sábado 25 de julio. El cuerpo celeste fue visible entre una hora y hora y media.

Did you know that last time a comet was visible in the sky -with the naked eye from all over the world- was 13 years ago? In 2007, Comet McNaught could be seen thanks to its intense luminosity, and this year, we were fortunate to enjoy another phenomenon as particular.
On July 23, Comet Neowise reached its closest point to Earth, that was 103 million Km. This is a rare and unpredictable astronomical phenomenon. In Cuenca, we enjoy the magic of the stars from one of the highest points of the Cajas National Park: Tres Cruces.
Desde este lugar tendrás una hermosa vista de una parte del complejo de lagunas del páramo -durante el día- y una oscuridad perfecta para fotografiar estrellas -durante la noche-. Si bien, el frío es penetrante, vale la pena para divertir a tu espíritu de aventura con todo lo que vas a ver.
A 4300 metros sobre el nivel del mar, la característica de esta zona (la más alta de la cordillera) es su bosque frondoso. Casi siempre está cubierto con neblina, que atraviesa el antiguo camino hacia Guayaquil.
El Camino de García Moreno cruza por aquí, donde puedes observar tres cruces de mármol rodeadas de rocas. Los lugareños dicen que estas piedras son en conmemoración a los viajeros que morían en este lugar debido al intenso frío al intentar quedarse durante su viaje desde la costa; pero estas cruces bien pudieron servir solamente para marcar este punto tan alto.
From this spot you will have a beautiful view of a part of the páramo lagoons complex -during the day- and a perfect darkness to photograph stars -during the night-. Although the cold is penetrating, it is worth it to entertain your spirit of adventure with everything you are about to see.
At 4300 meters above sea level, the characteristic of this area (the highest in the mountain range) is its lush forest. It is almost always covered with mist, which crosses the old road to Guayaquil. The Camino de García Moreno crosses here, where you can see three marble crosses surrounded by rocks. The locals say that these stones are in commemoration of travelers who died in this place, due to the intense cold when trying to stay during their trip from the coast; but these crosses could only serve to mark this high point.
Un poco más cercana a Cuenca, en la zona alta de Racar -parte de la Parroquia San Pedro del Cebollar-, los vecinos de la ciudad también pudieron observar este espectáculo natural.
