Cada mes de junio y durante siete días consecutivos, cientos de hostias, alfajores, frutas de leche condensada y mazapán, albaricoque, maní dulce, huevos de faltriquera, cocadas, arepas, monjas, suspiros, quesitos, pañuelos de hojaldre, roscas, algodón de azúcar y cientos de delicias más, llena de color, olor y sabor los alrededores del Parque Calderón, la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción, la Calle del Artista, Santa Ana y la Plaza de las Flores. Every June and for seven consecutive days, hundreds of wafers, caramel cookies, condensed milk and marzipan fruits, apricots, sweet peanuts, poultry eggs, cocadas, arepas, “nuns”, “sighs”, quesadillas, puff pastries, donuts, cotton candy and hundreds of other delicacies, full of color, smells and flavours around the Calderón Park, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Calle del Artista, Santa Ana and the Plaza de las Flores.
Para la cuencanidad, el Corpus Christi es la época ideal para salir al Centro Histórico en la noche y disfrutar de paseos con la familia y amigos. Comprar golosinas y probarlas ese momento mientras disfrutamos de bailes populares, con bandas de pueblo tocando y cantando la Chola Cuencana, quema de castillos, la “vaca loca”, fuegos artificiales y el lanzamiento de globos de aire caliente, es una experiencia única e inolvidable.

Si bien esta celebración católica, data del año 1557; es todavía considerada una de las festividades religiosas populares -más importantes- que se celebra cada año, con el impulso de la Arquidiócesis de Cuenca y la Alcaldía de la ciudad por medio de la Fundación Municipal de Turismo. El Corpus Christi es un espectáculo religioso y gastronómico, admirado por miles de familias ecuatorianas, turistas y viajeros.
Doña Dolores Larriva cuenta que su pasión por preparar dulces de corpus, viene de generación en generación por más de 60 años. Sus recetas que no las revela, las heredó de su mamá y abuela.
Así como esta familia, alrededor de 117 familias de artesanos tienen su propia historia, y cada año instalan sus puestos de dulces en los portales del Parque Calderón, para cientos de ciudadanos y visitantes puedan disfrutar de sus recetas, hechas dulce.

La crisis sanitaria que afecta al mundo, ha obligado a todos los sectores sociales y de ocio, a adaptarse a un nuevo estilo de vida, con un lavado constante de manos, uso de mascarilla y distanciamiento en espacios y personas.
Cada año el Corpus Christi, es un lugar de encuentro y disfrute entre propios y extraños, sin embargo este 2020 no podremos juntarnos y por lo tanto será diferente.
Utilizando los medios digitales, del 11 al 18 de junio, 15 artesanas de dulces exhibirán sus productos en la “Feria Virtual Corpus Christi”, espacio que albergará un catálogo en línea con el detalle de los dulces, precio, nombre, dirección y contacto del productor para pedidos a domicilio o compras directas al productor.

Estas acciones han sido debidamente planificadas entre la Empresa Pública Municipal de Desarrollo Económico (EDEC EP), Departamento de Áreas Históricas y la Fundación Municipal Turismo para Cuenca.
What will Corpus Christi be like in 2020?

Every year Corpus Christi is a place of encounter and enjoyment between us, however this 2020 we won't be able to get together and therefore it will be different.
Using digital media, from June 11 to 18, fifteen sweet artisans will display their products at the “Virtual Corpus Christi Fair”, a space that will house an online catalog with the details of the sweets, prices, names, address and contact of the producer, for takeouts or direct purchases.
In other words, all lovers of Corpus Christi sweets will be able to choose the flavors they like and will receive them at home. The catalog will be ready from June 11 and you will find it at:

These events have been planned between the Municipal Public Company for Economic Development (EDEC EP) and the Department of Historical Areas and the Cuenca Tourism Board.
To join this great initiative, the Tourism and Culture Department of the Archdiocese of Cuenca organized the “Exhibition of Products and Sweets of the city's Convents” at the Exhibition Hall of the San Luis Seminary. From June 11 to 18, this place will be adequate with all the biosecurity measures, so that both, artisans and consumers, expose and buy protected and confidently.
A esta gran iniciativa para probar nuestros dulces, se suma la “Exposición de Productos y Dulces de los Conventos de la ciudad”, organizado por el Departamento de Turismo y Cultura de la Arquidiócesis de Cuenca, en el Salón de Exposiciones del Seminario San Luis. Del 11 al 18 de junio, este espacio estará adecuado con todas las medidas de bioseguridad, para que tanto los artesanos como los consumidores, expongan y consuman protegidos y con confianza los dulces de la época.
¡Así será la celebración religiosa del Corpus Christi!
La fiesta del Corpus Christi, a más del sentido gastronómico representado en la gran variedad de dulces, tiene su lado espiritual, el de adoración al Santísimo Sacramento.
Por ello, la Arquidiócesis de Cuenca; ha preparado algunos eventos en línea para que todos puedan participar. El jueves 11 de junio se celebrarán dos eucaristías en la Catedral de La Inmaculada. La primera misa será a las 09H00 y la segunda a las 18H00. A esta última se suma la tradicional bendición y recorrido con el Santísimo a la redonda del Parque Calderón. La imagen será llevada por Monseñor Marcos Pérez Caicedo en un móvil cubierto. De existir fieles, estos deberán mantener el distanciamiento entre si, de 1.5 a 2 metros.

The Corpus Christi festival, in addition to the gastronomic side -represented in the great variety of sweets- has also its spiritual side: the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
For this reason, the Cuenca Archdiocese has prepared some online events for everyone to participate. On Thursday June 11 there will be two Eucharistic Celebrations. The first mass will be at 09:00 and the second, at 18:00. To the second one will be added the traditional blessing and the Walk with the Blessed Sacrament around the Calderón Park. The image will be carried by Monsignor Marcos Pérez Caicedo on a covered cart. The attendants must maintain a distance from each other (1.5 to 2 meters).
