Color returns to the Plaza de las Flores
La plaza de las Flores es, seguramente, uno de los puntos más coloridos del Centro Histórico de Cuenca. Está junto al claustro del Carmen de la Asunción y al frente de la ‘Calle del Artista’ y la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción.
Este particular colorido, no solo es reconocido por los cuencanos que caminamos por el centro de nuestra ciudad; en el libro “Four Seasons of Travel” (2013), de la revista National Geographic, esta “sencilla” plaza se ubicó en el primer lugar del top 10 de los mejores mercados de flores al aire libre. Compitió con Marché Aux Fleur, de Francia; el Bloemenmarkt, de los Países Bajos; el Campo Dei Fiore, en Italia; el Adderley Street Flower Market, de Sudáfrica; el Phool Mandi de India y el Pak Khlong Talat, de Tailandia.
Surely, Plaza de las Flores is one of the most colorful spots in the Historic Center of Cuenca. It is located next to the Cloister of Carmen de la Asunción and in front of the ‘Calle del Artista’ and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Its particular colorfulness is not only recognized by the people of Cuenca who walk through the center of our city; In the book “Four Seasons of Travel” (2013), from National Geographic magazine, this “simple” square was ranked first in the top 10 of the best outdoor flower markets. He competed with Marché Aux Fleur, from France; the Bloemenmarkt, from the Netherlands; Campo Dei Fiore, in Italy; the Adderley Street Flower Marker, from South Africa; the Phool Mandi from India and the Pak Khlong Talat from Thailand.
Comerciantes de flores y plantas poseen puestos para la venta de todo tipo de flores y pequeños arreglos con cactus. Este es definitivamente un lugar turístico y tradicional para Cuenca. Tanto turistas nacionales como extranjeros, e incluso los cuencanos, visitamos la plaza muy seguido, porque no sólo llama la atención su colorido, sino también el olor dulce que tienen las rosas, margaritas, astromelias y crisantemos.
Flower and plant merchants have stalls to sell all kinds of flowers and small arrangements with cactus. This is definitely a tourist and traditional place of Cuenca. Both national and foreign tourists, and even those from Cuenca, visit the square very often, not only because its color strikes, but also the sweet smell of roses, daisies, astromelias and chrysanthemums.
A causa del problema de salubridad mundial, por COVID 19, nuestros comerciantes se tomaron un tiempo para la planificación y socialización sobre las medidas de bioseguridad que fueron implementados para salvaguardar la salud de los usuarios y visitantes de la Plaza.
Ahora, la entrada y la salida están controladas para seguir un orden. Cuentan con un dispensador de gel desinfectante para manos, que se activa con el pie, para minimizar el contacto, y también con un espacio para desinfectar los zapatos.
Recuerda que el uso de una mascarilla y el distanciamiento físico, de dos metros, es obligatorio. Los puestos cuentan también con una mica de protección.
Due to the global health problem, by COVID-19, our merchants took some time to plan and socialize about the biosecurity measures that were implemented to guard the health of users and visitors of the Plaza.
The entry and the exit are now controlled to follow an order. They have a disinfectant gel dispenser for the hands, which is activated with the foot -to minimize contact- and also a place to disinfect the shoes.
Remember that the use of a mask and the physical distance of two meters is mandatory. The stalls also have a protective plastic.
Próximamente, también se activará el Monasterio del Carmen de la Asunción, una de las majestuosas estructuras religiosas de Cuenca. Sus paredes de mármol son un ejemplo hermoso del estilo barroco de la ciudad. Debemos ser pacientes, puesto que las reuniones de personas son contraindicadas durante esta etapa de COVID.
En un pequeño local, dentro de la plazoleta, volveremos a probar la “Agüita de Pítimas”, una planta medicinal típica que, según nos cuentan, sirve para el sistema nervioso, el estrés, el corazón y ‘ayuda a calmar el sufrimiento’.
Frente a la Plaza de las Flores, sobre la Calle Mariscal Sucre -entre Benigno Malo y Padre Aguirre- está “La Calle del Artista”; una cuadra junto a la Catedral, que aloja a artistas, nacionales e internacionales (cantantes, músicos, pintores, bailarines, mimos, artesanos, titiriteros, etc.) que comparten su obra con los transeúntes.
Soon, the Monastery “Carmen de la Asunción” -one of the majestic religious structures in Cuenca- will also be opened. Its marble walls are a beautiful example of the city's Baroque style. We must be patient, people’s gatherings are contraindicated during this stage of COVID.
In a small place, inside the plaza, it will be possible to try the “Agüita de Pítimas”, a typical medicinal plant that -according to what we’ve been told- works for the nervous system, stress, the heart and "helps to calm suffering".
In front of the Plaza de las Flores, on Mariscal Sucre -between Benigno Malo and Padre Aguirre streets- "La Calle del Artista" is located; a block next to the Cathedral, which host national and international artists (singers, musicians, painters, dancers, mimes, artisans, puppeteers, etc.) that share their work with the people that walk-by.
Desde 1999, cuando la UNESCO declaró a Cuenca como ‘Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad’, la ciudad ha recibido varios reconocimientos internacionales gracias a sus pintorescas y majestuosas características.
