Enjoy Christmas in Cuenca
En Cuenca, la Navidad es una fiesta muy grande y una de las más importantes festividades en el Azuay es la dedicada al "Niño Viajero". Esta se celebra el 24 de diciembre de cada año en la ciudad de Cuenca, una procesión cargada de villancicos, donde participan todos los devotos cuencanos.
Incluso aquellos que realizan “compras de última hora”, se mezclan entre la gente para ver un poquito de la procesión.
Una imagen del Niño Dios fue encargada por Doña Josefa Heredia en 1823. Algún tiempo después (en 1961), su último dueño, el Monseñor Miguel Cordero Crespo, realizó una peregrinación a varios lugares de Tierra Santa acompañado por la imagen. Al final de este viaje, el Niño fue bendecido por el Papa Juan XXIII.
Cuando la escultura estuvo nuevamente en Cuenca, los devotos le dieron el nombre de "Niño Viajero". Desde ese entonces, se le rinde culto el día de Navidad, en la gran procesión o "pase", que generalmente inicia a las 10h00 y concluye aproximadamente a las 15h00. La procesión se inicia en la avenida Ordóñez Lazo y recorre la calle Simón Bolívar, en el centro de la ciudad de Cuenca.
In Cuenca, Christmas is a very big celebration, and one of the most important festivities in Azuay is dedicated to the "Traveler Child". It is celebrated on December 24 of each year in the city of Cuenca, a procession loaded with Christmas carols, where all the Cuenca devotees participate.
Even those who make "last minute purchases", mingle with the people to see a little of the procession.
An image of the Child God was commissioned by Doña Josefa Heredia in 1823. Some time later (in 1961), its last owner, Monsignor Miguel Cordero Crespo, made a pilgrimage to various places in the Holy Land accompanied by the image. At the end of this journey, the Child was blessed by Pope John XXIII.
When the sculpture was again in Cuenca, the devotees gave it the name of "Niño Viajero" (Traveler Child). Since then, it has been worshiped on Christmas Day, in the great procession or "pass", which generally begins at 10:00 am and ends at approximately 3:00 pm. The procession begins on Ordóñez Lazo Avenue and runs through Simón Bolívar Street, in the city center of Cuenca.
Aunque el 2020 ha sido un año sumamente diferente, queremos recordar esta celebración, que ha sido siempre la más esperada del año, en la ciudad.
Normalmente, se podían observar elementos muy típicos en la celebración: vistosos e innumerables carros alegóricos, bandas populares que interpretan canciones dedicadas al Niño, conjuntos musicales campesinos, niños disfrazados de personajes bíblicos, pastores, gitanos, jíbaros, saraguros, otavalos, cholos y cholas cuencanas, y otras etnias ecuatorianas. Los trajes siempre son vistosos, coloridos y elegantes, para expresar la riqueza de las regiones.
Algunos niños disfrazados van en caballos o mulas cubiertas por mantas o tejidos de lana y seda, junto al "castillo" (un conjunto de alimentos armado en forma de guirnaldas con frutas, legumbres, bombones, botellas de licor, juguetes, etc.). Los "castillos" constituyen "ofrendas" al Niño.
Los participantes de la procesión llevan consigo alimentos típicos como papas cocidas, huevos duros, ajíes, chanchos horneados, cuyes, pavos y pollos asados: los cuales llevan con frecuencia lazos de cintas y billetes en sus hocicos o picos. Finalizado el pase, existen celebraciones en sus hogares, en las que desarman los castillos para disfrutar de una deliciosa comida.
Although 2020 has been a very different year, we want to remember this celebration, which has always been the most anticipated of the year.
Normally, very typical elements could be observed in the celebration: colorful and innumerable floats, popular bands that interpret songs dedicated to the Child, peasant musical groups, children dressed as biblical characters, shepherds, gypsies, jíbaros, saraguros, otavalos, cholos and cholas of Cuenca, and other Ecuadorian ethnic groups. The costumes are always showy, colorful and elegant, to express the richness of the regions.
Some children in costume go on horses or mules covered by blankets or woolen and silk fabrics, next to the "castle" (a set of food made in the shape of garlands with fruits, vegetables, chocolates, bottles of liquor, toys, etc.). The "castles" constitute offerings to the Child.
The participants of the procession carry with them typical foods such as boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, chili peppers, baked pigs, guinea pigs, turkeys, and roast chickens: which often carry ribbons and banknotes on their snouts or beaks. After the pass, there are celebrations in their homes, in which they disarm the castles to enjoy a delicious meal.
¿Qué sucederá este 2020?
Para proteger a los cuencanos y visitantes del COVID-19, las autoridades de la ciudad decidieron que todas las celebraciones litúrgicas, en honor al Niño Viajero, se celebraran en la Catedral de la Inmaculada o Catedral Nueva. Cabe recalcar que habrá un aforo restringido, pero la imagen estará expuesta en este templo durante todo el mes de diciembre de 2020, así nuestros fieles tendrán el tiempo necesario para realizar sus visitas.
Por otro lado, el Ejército apoyará la celebración con sobrevuelos por la ciudad y las zonas rurales, durante el 24 de diciembre, con el Niño Viajero. Posteriormente, la imagen recorrerá las calles principales de la ciudad, en un móvil y se pedirá que la ciudadanía reciba la bendición desde el interior de sus hogares. La intención es evitar aglomeraciones.
To protect Cuencans and visitors from COVID-19, the city authorities decided that all liturgical celebrations, in honor of the Traveler Child, be held in the Cathedral of the Immaculate or New Cathedral. It should be noted the restricted capacity, but the image will be exhibited in this temple throughout December 2020, so the faithful will have the necessary time to make their visits.
On the other hand, the military will support the celebration with overflights over the city and rural areas, on December 24, with the Traveler Child. Subsequently, the image will travel the main streets of the city, on a small car and the citizens will be asked to receive the blessing from inside their homes. The intention is to avoid crowds.

Cuenca fue nombrada Ciudad Artesanal y Diversa del Mundo, por el Consejo Mundial de Artesanías (World Craft Council), un organismo no gubernamental afiliado a la Unesco.
Por esta razón, los principales parques y plazas del Centro Histórico de la ciudad estarán activas en un Ruta de Navidad, donde podrás disfrutar de diferentes instalaciones luminarias, realizar fotografías y pasear, mientras realizas tus compras navideñas. Encontrarás regalos únicos para tu familia y amigos.
El Otorongo, San Sebastián, Santo Domingo, La Plazoleta del Vado, El Parque Calderón, Plazoleta Hermano Miguel, San Francisco, Portal Artesanal, La Iglesia de Turi; son algunos de los lugares que estarán iluminados para que visites la ciudad con todas las normas de bioseguridad requeridas, durante esta Navidad. Recuerda que así cuidarás de ti y las personas que más quieres.

Of course! Remember that this Christmas we have invited you to buy and give products generated by our artisans. Apart from activating the local economy, you will be supporting artists who were awarded in November of this year for the beauty and originality of their work. Cuenca was named an Artisan and Diverse City of the World by the World Craft Council, a non-governmental organization affiliated with Unesco.
For this reason, the main parks and squares of the Historic Center of the city will be active in a Christmas Route, where you can enjoy different lighting installations, take pictures and walk, while you do your Christmas shopping. You will find unique gifts for your family and friends.
